I saw this fire hydrant a few weeks ago, but was unable to stop and take some pictures at the time. Not having taken any pictures this week, I decided to pay a visit to this lonely looking hydrant. I say lonely, because it kind of sits in the middle of nowhere. There are no houses close by, no buildings of any sort for at least a mile. I believe the physical isolation of this fire hydrant affected the way I photographed it. It's presence in the image is much like it's presence it real life.
Motorcycle Details
Once a year, Galveston hosts a fairly large motorcycle rally, It's called the Lone Star Rally. According to their website, more than 400,00 people attended last year. The entire downtown area is filled with the roar of Harleys and bikers having a good time. It's a lot of fun, and a great oppurtunity to take pictures. The images below were taken a couple of years ago, right after I got might first DSLR camera. I was still shooting film up until then. Needless to say, I was doing a lot of experimenting with the camera, and afterwards with Adobe Lightroom. I'm looking forward to this years rally to go out and mingle among the exotic bikes and masses of people.
Demacks Produce
True to my word, I went out and took some pictures this week. This is of a building in the downtown area of Galveston, Texas. Writing about my pictures is proving much harder than actually taking them. I must have typed and deleted 30 sentences by now. Back in college in my photography courses, I continually had to talk about and critique my work as well as others. I'm pretty sure that is a skill I'll need to relearn as I go through with this blog. For now, I'll keep it simple and say that I've always enjoyed taking pictures of old and worn out things. I believe that I find the textures found in older objects adds an extra element to the form of the photographs.
Thanks for the comments, likes, and encouragement on the last post. Knowing that someone even noticed that I started this page helped get me out shooting last week.
First Post
Here it goes. My name is John, and this is my first post in my first ever blog. (does "blog" stand for anything?) I guess I could google it. Anyway, I've been a photographer for quite some time, but I haven't really made any new work recently. I'm starting this blog as an attempt to kinda kick start my addiction with photography again. My goal is to post a new photo each week. I'm going to start off with an older image, but it's my intention to add new/recent work each week.
I'm about to upload my first photo, and I've realized that I really don't have a clue about all of the different settings. This is going to be quite a learning experience for me.
I'm going to start this off with an image I took some time ago. I was living in Salt Lake City at the time (around 1996-1997 I believe) and decided to do a bit of exploring and found this old railroad car. To tell you the truth, I hardly remember much about it, but I like the image, and its an easy one to start off with.
For anyone interested, this image was shot with a Pentax 67, 45mm lens, T-Max 400 Film. Scanned to digital using an Epson V600 scanner.
